The paintings I notice have strong compositions, depth, emphasise tonal contrasts and play with light. The painting that first made me think that paint could inspire was Friedrich's "Winter Landscape" which is stacked with atmosphere. It is difficult to imagine a photograph doing the same. So I aim for the unusual, a painting that can take you in, instead of just hanging on the wall. How do you get emotion onto a canvas?
